In order to ensure optimal use of the Primary Health Care (PHC) grant while increasing access to essential medicines in the Private Not for Profit (PNFP) sector, the Ministry of Health established an essential medicines and health supplies credit line at Joint Medical Stores. This credit line was established by centralizing 50% of the PHC grant to health facilities at JMS to be used to procure an agreed list of Essential Medicines and Health Supplies and distribute to accredited PNFP health facilities. The aim of centralization of a proportion of this grant is to ensure availability, cost effectiveness and appropriate use/distribution of essential medicines & health supplies (EMHS) in the private not for profit sector.
Joint Medical Store, on behalf of the Ministry of Health procures and distributes Essential Medicines & Health Supplies (EMHS) to facilities based on the EMHS annual budget allocations per facility issued by MOH.
This project supports the procurement and delivery of essential Primary Health Care (PHC) commodities for 557 PNFP facilities in Uganda, including essential medicines, laboratory supplies, and health facility consumables.
JMS is the leading Private Not-for-Profit Organization (PNFP) established in 1979 by Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau (UCMB) and Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau (UPMB) as a body Corporate under the Trustees Incorporation Act (Cap 165) licensed by the National Drug Authority (NDA) of Uganda.
