Reproductive Health Commodities project overview

Joint Medical Store (JMS) is a strategic partner in advancing reproductive health outcomes in Uganda through the end-to-end warehousing and distribution of family planning and reproductive health (RH) commodities for the Private Not-for-Profit (PNFP) sector.
Implemented under the Alternative Distribution Strategy (ADS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health Uganda, as part of implementing the reproductive, maternal, newborn child, adolescent and health aging sharpened plan and investment case II 2022/23- 2026/27 this program strengthens access to essential reproductive health and family planning commodities and drives increased uptake of family planning services across the country.
The activity ensures the consistent availability of a comprehensive basket of reproductive health commodities, including implants, injectables, oral contraceptives, condoms, and maternal health supplies supporting improved service delivery at health facilities and contributing to better health outcomes for communities

Last Mile Condom Distribution Initiative

A flagship component of the ADS program is the Last Mile Condom Distribution Initiative, led by JMS with support from development partners and the Ministry of Health Uganda since 2021. This initiative is designed to eliminate condom stock-outs and expand access in high-risk and underserved communities, particularly in hotspots characterized by increased demand and limited reach of conventional supply chains. By deploying targeted distribution strategies and innovative delivery models, JMS ensures that critical prevention commodities reach the populations that need them most when and where they are needed.
Strategic Objectives

Key Achievements
  •  Successfully implemented the ADS distribution model in partnership with the Ministry of Health Uganda
  • Improved availability of family planning commodities across PNFP facilities nationwide
  • Significantly reduced stock-out rates for key RH commodities in both PNFP and public sectors
  • Distributed and installed over 5,000 condom dispensers across high-demand hotspots nationwide
  • Implemented a targeted Last Mile Condom Distribution model reaching high-risk populations
  • Supported the rollout of the MOH digital last-mile condom distribution platform
  • Strengthened facility capacity in inventory management, reporting, and data use
  • Successfully transitioned from the JMS NFT Mobility App to a MOH-led digital distribution platform, enhancing sustainability and national ownership

 

Impact


Through this program, JMS continues to strengthen Uganda’s reproductive health ecosystem by ensuring that essential commodities are consistently available, accessible, and efficiently delivered, particularly in underserved and high-risk communities. The result is a more resilient, data-driven, and responsive supply chain that supports improved health outcomes and advances national priorities in family planning and reproductive health.
